Jack G. Charney is a Senior Partner in the Estates and Trusts Group at Henderson, Caverly, Pum & Charney LLP. Mr. Charney represents the Firm’s clients in estate planning, probate and trust administration, and estate and gift tax matters.

Mr. Charney has been recognized as one of The Best Lawyers in America® (2002 to present) and is also listed in Southern California Super Lawyers – San Diego, most recently in 2008. He has been a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) since 1987, serving as a Regent since 2003 and as Chairman of the Professional Standards Committee from 1997 to 1999.

Mr. Charney has been a member of the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law since 2000. He is also a member of the San Diego County Bar Association (Member, Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Section (Chair, 1981); Member, Taxation Section), the State Bar of California (Trusts and Estates Section) and the San Diego Estate Planning Council (President, 1995-1996).

Mr. Charney received his law degree from Stanford University in 1971 and his bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University in 1968. Prior to joining Henderson, Caverly, Pum & Charney in 2008, Mr. Charney was a Senior Partner in the Family Wealth and Exempt Organizations Practice Group at Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps LLP. During his 25 years at Luce Forward, Mr. Charney was a member of that firm's Executive Committee and Chair of the Family Wealth and Exempt Organizations Practice Group.

Mr. Charney has spoken and written on numerous subjects relating to estate planning, taxation, estate and trust administration, and charitable giving, including presentations to the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, the Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB), Sharp Hospitals Foundation, Scripps Memorial Hospitals Foundation, the California and San Diego Trial Lawyers Associations, the San Diego County Bar Association, the San Diego Estate Planning Council, the La Jolla Probate Section, the Salk Institute, and numerous private organizations. Mr. Charney is the author of "New Charitable Contribution Appraisal Regulations," Estate Planning and California Probate Reporter (CEB, 1985) and "Estate Planning for Copyrights," Estate Planning and California Probate Reporter (CEB, 1990), as well as the co-author of “Generation to Generation: A Guide to Personalized Charitable Gift Planning,” (Jewish Community Foundation, 1990) and “Probating the Small Estate” (San Diego Trial Lawyers Association, 1980).

In addition to his many professional achievements, Mr. Charney has devoted his time and talent to serve many worthy community organizations, including the Mingei International Museum (President, 2003-2005), Children's Hospital Foundation (Trustee; Chair, Planned Giving Committee, 1995-1997; Foundation Chair, 2000-2002), the San Diego Chamber Orchestra (President, 1993-1995), the San Diego Vanderbilt Club (President, 1976-1987); San Diego and Inland Empire Chapter of Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (President, 1987-1989), the Salk Institute Planned Giving Committee (Chair, 1996-1999), the UCSD Planned Giving Executives Committee (Chair, 1992-1993), the UCSD Foundation Planned Gifts Subcommittee, and the San Diego Foundation (Philanthropy Committee; San Diego Regional Disaster Fund, 2003-2005).
